Finding the sea gypsy village ended up being a lot harder than I expected. I saw a few signs but I never did find the village. I did find a mysterious temple on a hill though. At the ground there were a few buildings and statues as well as small bungalows surrounding a pond which I assume are for the monks.
About halfway up the hill I found a wooded area with buddhas and a few more buildings, abandoned. The rooms looked like they used to be housing for the monks as well though.
The road looped around the top of the hill, with many statues and memorials along the inside wall. Along the outside were several viewpoints where I could look out over the island. The mystery is that somewhere behind these statues is another temple building. I could see it from the ground, but I couldn't find any kind of stairs or doors to get there.
When I returned down the hill I found this awesome statue amongst the Buddhas.
The main road is lined with large sidewalks and benches. One area extends out into the mangrove swamp allowing you to get closer to the monkeys that hang out there.

I went to check out the fishing pier and to search for lunch. This shop didn't have any food, but it did have a bunch of fisherman singing karaoke!

That statue looks like something that could have been in parade the circle! Very cool and you look very nice in that dress :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat are Sea Gypsy's? Did I miss a post, glad you were able to stumble on a cool village while you were wandering
Supposedly they are a semi-nomadic group that lives by the sea (I just found the village on a list of places to visit on the wikitravel page when I was searching for something to do)
DeleteIs that my dress? and yes what are Sea Gypsies are you going to try to find them again? Are you riding a motorbike or a passenger?
ReplyDeleteYep, I love it, dries quick and packs great!
DeleteMostly passenger but I have driven my friend's a couple times.
