Morning in Georgetown

Ouch!  I had a lovely day exploring Georgetown, Penang, but wow do my feet hurt!

I woke up relatively early (mostly because the hostel didn't have AC and it was pretty hot in the dorm room) and headed out to find breakfast and check out the town.  The morning light was beautiful on the buildings. (I somehow managed to take about 600 photos today, yikes!)

They have these metal sculptures all over town.  I feel like I'm doing some kind of scavenger hunt whenever I find one.

Fried rice for breakfast
Had to try this too, silken tofu with brown
sugar syrup, yum!

I found a local market close by several butchers.

Fresh meat...

I didn't want to get too close to investigate, but it looked like
this guy was filling the small metal buckets up with blood

The open sewers here can be pretty disgusting, in the residential sections they aren't too bad though.

So colorful!

Firehouse!

I'm not having much luck with the hostels here.  Last night I stayed in a beautiful old building but they didn't have lockers and I don't want to have to lug my computer around me with all day.  I was packing up to leave this morning and and the other girl in my dorm room was yelling at one of the guys (who she didn't know) because he had read her journal.  And he was kind of a weird guy anyway; he was lying on his bed in briefs and a fanny pack, and apparently been looking at my bags as well because he started talking to me about Buffalo.

I moved right down the street to another hostel which is a couple dollars more but does have lockers.  It doesn't have hot water, the internet is aggravatingly slow, and there are no outlets upstairs which is annoying because they close the lobby at 11 and my computer is almost dead.  I could deal with all that, but the owner just had a fight with a guy who apparently was supposed to stay here last night but left in the middle of the night for some reason.  I'm not sure who was wrong, but either way, the owner wasn't particularly polite.

  2. Glad you could change accommodations quickly. Is Malaysia muslim? Is that a swastika on the ladies cooking stall? We're enjoying your photos!

    1. Malaysia is Muslim, although there are pockets of Hindus and Buddhists around where I'm staying. It is a swastika, but not the Nazi type, just a symbol in Sanskrit. The structure is actually a shrine.

  3. That was a great sculpture. Do they look like the same artist? It seems like a better idea than yarn bombing. I hope you figure out the hostel situation ......
