Thai cookery

I took a cooking class yesterday! My first real 'touristy' thing aside from the free markets and temples. It was great! (Aside from me getting sick that is. Perfect timing, I've had nothing really important planned all week and of course the two days that I book trips, I get a terrible cold)

Various types of jasmine and sticky rice
The cooking class was through Thai Farm Cooling School and I got a 100 baht discount through Same Same hostel and a free night, so it was only 900 baht, not too bad.
We started out with a trip to a local market where we learned about the different ingredients then drove out to their organic farm about 45 minutes outside of the city.  The market had everything from frogs and pig heads to fresh coconut milk, palm sugar and some prepared foods.

A delicious looking buffet in the market
A follow up from the cow head in Morocco?

We took a walk around the garden and the instructor, Pern, showed us the fresh vegetables that we would be using in our dishes.  Pern was awesome and hilarious.  She kept making the funniest and most unexpected jokes.

Making curry paste by hand is hard work!

Coconut soup, I haven't gotten it here at all and only a few
times at home but it is SO good!

Pad Thai

Mango and sticky rice, my new favorite dessert

  1. Everything looks so beautiful.
Are farms mostly organic in Thailand or do you know if they use a lot of chemicals.

  2. Most of them use chemicals. They also don't have an 'organic' designation like we do, so in the stores products can be called organic even if they aren't by our standards. But there are a few farms, including one at a local temple, that don't use chemicals.
