Everyone has been so nice today, I love Malaysia!
I took a bus to Serembam this morning and jumped the fun a bit, getting off in the middle of town instead of at the bus station. I ended up having breakfast at a Muslim restaurant. I had some trouble explaining that I was vegetarian to the staff and one of the customers helped translate and then ended up buying my meal.
I had to take a second bus to Melaka, and then a third to Chinatown where the hostels are, and when I got off and was walking around with my bag a guy on a motorbike drove yelling 'welcome to Mareka!'. I've only been here a couple hours and already a couple people have stopped me on the street just to say hi and chat.
After looking around for awhile I found a decent hostel and they put me in my own dorm room 'because I'm a girl' (I'm not going to fight it!) And I met a young Filipino guy there who works for Priceline and was telling me about all the places I should visit. Had a funny conversation with a woman about sea cucumbers.
Now I just finished lunch at a quiet little restaurant along the river, vegetarian Curry Mee and... a root beer float! I don't know why, since I rarely have them at home, but I've been wanting one for a while, and the Coke float I got a couple weeks ago just wasn't the same.
Oh yeah, and they have designated 'no smoking' areas in the city. I think I'm going to like Melaka!
Did you wear your new scarf in the Moslem restaurant?
ReplyDeleteNo, it was mostly just for the mosques and the cold bus rides. There is such a diverse group of people here that you aren't expected to cover up unless you're in a religious place.
Deletewhitney:)how are you?where are you now?i stay penang now.haha.
