As if to mock us because of the season in which we decided to visit, today has been overcast and drizzly. Nothing like the torrential downpours I have heard described as 'biblical', just a subtle reminder that it is the rainy season and we should not come to expect beautiful sunny days.
The rain started just as I got to the beach. Barely anything, just the occasional rain drop. The beach is peaceful by my accommodation although maybe a little less so the last couple days as the party goers have been arriving in droves. The second day I was here I walked along the beach the 4.5 miles to Haad Rin, where the full moon party takes place, and barely encountered anyone until I got to the big resorts by town, aside from the occasional fisherman. Today I just walked to the beach close by and there were several people, including a group kite boarding along the sand banks. I thought at first they were just sailing abnormally large and strangely sail shaped kites, until I saw one of them skimming across the water. It looked like fun! Although it must be difficult since I never did see anyone else have any success.
I spent sometime watching the kite boarders and enjoying the relative quiet but as soon as I laid down my towel the rain drops started coming down harder, not enough to warrant pulling out my umbrella, but just to the point where I didn't want to have my book out and lying on the beach wasn't really comfortable. So I ended up returning to my room and sitting out under the cover of the porch reading, which was fine by me.
I feel a little guilty because after doing nothing all day, I had a brownie and ice cream for dinner. (In my defense though, a brownie is not something you see everyday here, and I just couldn't resist!) And it just seemed like that kind of day, rainy and a little bit chilly. I discovered the place last night but they had run out of brownies, and they hadn't finished baking them earlier this afternoon when I checked (I became a bit obsessed, I know, but I just couldn't get it out of my head!). Persistence pays off though, and it was a pretty good brownie!
I would have gone out of the way for that brownie too!
